We're "On the Run"!
There is something about a Beyoncé show. The energy is amazing. It’s like Tina Turner and Prince rolled into one. And there is something equally amazing about a Jay Z show. He goes through his catalog and you rock with him, you listen and reflect; because he IS the best rapper. We're not even going to debate this. So to see these two together, is something of a mirage if you will; an awesome mirage of all the good that music has to offer including hit songs, smoke, pyrotechnics, THE DANCING, and loads of surprises. And let's not forget the out of this world Phashion! If we include the Chicago stop of the On the Run Tour, Phashion Phish has seen Jay Z five times, including one of the opening shows at Barclays Center and Beyoncé four times. If we included covering Destiny’s Child back in 1997 when they opened up for Jon B, that would make it five!
We’re not afraid to say we’re fans of their music. We’ve grown up with it and it has been the soundtrack to many parties, heartbreaks, and random summer happenings, so seeing them in concert separately is always a treat. But the On the Run Tour is different! We have before us two of the greatest musicians of our generation, that are sure to leave a legacy that changed the game, not just musically; but also in the way music is distributed and accessed by fans.
We’ve dodged as many reviews and YouTube videos as we could, so that everything we experienced would be a SURPRISE! No spoilers for us, and it was well worth it!
The On the Run Tour has been billed as the tour of the summer and a MUST SEE; and Jay Z and Beyoncé didn’t disappoint. From start to finish you get your money’s worth, and then some!
Before the show even started concert goers were greeted with the words, "This is Not Real Life" on the screen, setting the stage for what is safe to say is a concert extravaganza, of large proportions! The set list included:
1. “’03 Bonnie & Clyde”
2. “Upgrade U”

The set list for the 2 1/2 hour show included every song that you could think of and then some, including Beyoncé taking over singing duties for Justin Timberlake on "Holy Grail". The performance of "Song Cry" by Jay Z really stood out, as it is not a song he normally does live and it definitely shows a more emotional and sensitive side. It is a Jay Z fan favorite! Beyoncé's rendition of "Ex Factor" by Lauryn Hill has us hoping she'll release her cover version to the masses! We also enjoyed the interpretive dance intro for her song "Ghost/Haunted", one of the strongest songs off of the new album.
This was also the first tour for Beyoncé that didn’t include the Destiny’s Child medley, which was a nice change.
The presentation of the show was also stunning! With a small center stage and walkway between it and the main stage; The Carters were able to interact with the crowd throughout the show utilizing the two stages. It also was used for solo performances by both artists, our FAVORITE dancers Les Twins, and the last two songs, "Forever Young" and "Halo" which they performed together.
Jay Z and Beyoncé also turned up their wardrobes to epic levels! With Jay Z being styled by the fabulous June Ambrose and Beyoncé styled by the incredible Ty Hunter, there were pieces from a number of designers and Phashion houses, including Agent Provocateur, Diesel, Tom Ford, and Versace.
The show also featured great lighting and pyrotechnics! It was not lost on us, that during the transition from "This is Not Real Life" to "This is Real Life", the lighting got softer and changed to a lovely blue, prior to the presentation of intimate home movies; that included never before seen footage from their wedding and Blue Ivy's birth.
The interaction between the couple also proved to be both genuine and sweet. Can we just say that we love their love?
Are we looking forward to more shows from our very own musical royalty? Uh, YES! They’re AWESOME separately, but we hope they do another tour together. AND we’ve got to get them to Detroit! If you didn't get a chance to see the On the Run Tour, the HBO special is set to air on September 20th!
