It's Lolla 2014!

For our first foray into Lollapalooza, we decided to only brave Saturday to see main attractions Outkast, Nas, and Fitz and the Tantrums. You can check out our review on Outkast and Nas here.

What we really enjoyed about Lollapalooza was that while navigating the crowds to get from one stage to another, we were able to experience other bands we hadn’t planned on actually seeing. We got a chance to check out Temper Trap, performing “Sweet Disposition” while waiting for Fitz and the Tantrums and GROUPLOVE performing “Colours” prior to the start of Nas’ set. And they were GOOD! We hopped right on to iTunes to download their songs.

Fitz and the Tantrums had a GREAT set, performing “Fools Gold”, our personal favorite “MoneyGrabber”, a cover of “Sweet Dreams” by the Eurhythmics, and their latest hit “The Walker”. We also LOVED the crowd interaction, with Fitz telling the crowd that they needed to get low and “. . . better drop it like it’s hot” or he would call them out!

And prior to the start of the AMAZING Outkast set, we got to check out Foster the People and hear their hit song, “Pumped Up Kicks”, which we absolutely LOVE.

Many people complain about the price of Lollapalooza and the band line-up to which we say, if you don’t want to go then DON’T! The quality and number of artists available to enjoy on just one day is worth the price of admission. Even though we were there mainly to see three acts, we liked being able to check out the other artists and the variety of vendors and booths that were available. We even took a trip into Kidapalooza, which was VERY COOL and a great way to introduce kids to music and the festival scene! It definitely is all about experiencing different types of music and taking in the atmosphere. We even did a quick loop through Perry’s and it was quite a show! If you’ve never done it, it’s definitely worth checking out!

There were also lots of free activities like the Space Disco curated by Toyota, where you could make a custom tote bag! How sweet is that??? And for all the people that complain about the corporate take-over? Look, you have to have sponsors to pay for things. GET OVER IT!

We also liked Lollapalooza’s free water stations! We took full advantage and were hydrated ALL DAY LONG! They also had volunteers around passing out garbage bags and if you brought one back full, you got a free t-shirt. It was a great way to keep Grant Park clean throughout the day!

The F.Y.E Autograph Tent was also a pretty cool concept and we got a kick out of being able to get an autographed album from Fitz and the Tantrums. Sure, you had to buy something, but for an $18 album or $10 CD, it was a fair trade! And they did it all weekend with a variety of artists, including Delta Rae, Foster the People, and Spoon.

There were many food options in Chow Town from BBQ and the Original Rainbow Cone to the Lobster Corn Dog and Truffle and Parmesan Popcorn from Graham Elliot; there were also a number of vegetarian and vegan choices. You also had the option to take a whirl in the Farmers Market for more healthy options.

Entry was also smooth for us on Saturday and seemed to be very organized considering the large crowds trying to enter at one time. And Lolla Cashless, a new wristband feature that allowed you to pay for food and merchandise, was very convenient!

There were a couple new additions to Lollapalooza this year, including “Art Alliance: The Provocateurs” and the two story LollaShop at Block Thirty Seven in the Loop. You can check out some of our favorites from the art exhibit here. The LollaShop featured all of the Lollapalooza merchandise you could ever want or need, from t-shirts to tambourines. On the second floor, there was a space for the scheduled spinning classes and a Red Door Spa that was offering an abundance of services including mini manicures, feather hair accessories, and massages for the festival weary.

AND, if that wasn’t enough, Lollapalooza also offered Aftershows in case you couldn’t get to the main event or there were artists you really liked, but didn’t get a chance to see. We kept the party going with the Jhene Aiko show at Reggie’s Rock Club and you can check out our review here. There were also Aftershows from other artists including The Head and the Heart, Martin Garrix, and Trombone Shorty & New Orleans Avenue.

For the VIP's you could partake of the Hard Rock Hotel's, The Sound of Your Stay Music Lounge that featured a DJ, drinks, snacks, swag, a beauty bar, and interactive activities. The party went all day and into the night, with special DJ sets and live performances!

Hey, we remember when Lollapalooza was a traveling summer music festival, so to experience it in Grant Park is really next level! We’re already looking forward to next year!  Lollapalooza 2015 is scheduled for July 31 – August 2.
